slight modification to what LambadaLou stated: First offence = $2,000 fine or 200 hrs of cleaning road sides. second offence = THROW THE BOOK AT THEM. third offence = put them "Under the Jail"

Surety of penalty is one of the best deterrents to drunk driving. (I lost my kid brother to a drunk/drugged driver).

ə license suspension is pointless. they will drive anyway. nor do interlock breathing devices work as they can be fooled. i would select imprisonment (preferably house arrest with gps) plus rehab, but that was not given as an option. i picked rehab for that reason. ə

A "SPECIAL" prison, sort of like a rooming house. Prisoners must be in the building from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. They would be allowed to go to work (by public transportation only) AND they must pay their way; a DAILY prison charge so this is done at no cost to the city, county, state or federal governrnents... and especially no cost to tax payers. Any, REPEAT "ANY" breaking of the rules or failure to hold a job, then they go to regular prison for a minimum of five (5) years with no chance of parole. Second offense is Ten (10) years and a third offense would be Twenty (20) years. Want to bet the DUI rate hits rock bottom within a year?????

I think it should be a Federal law that "every" vehicle to be licensed or registered, must have a breathalyzer installed into the vehicle (and have proof it's on the vehicle) that would allow or prevent the car to start, depending on the drivers alcohol content. Also, from this day forward, make it mandatory for all vehicle manufactures to have this device as a standard feature added to all vehicles.

honestly, alcohol is more dangerous & more addictive than most drugs, if this world was "fair" itd be illegal just as pot & cocaine.. although mamma did always say, the only trouble you can find yourself in while getting stonded, if that fight you have with your potato chips trying to get them open

Pull the license plate or impound the car! If someone lends the perp their car and they get busted again for a DUI, impound the owners car! Being a former Reserve Police Officer from MI, I have seen what a drunk driver has done to other peoples lives....very sad for the victims!

Heavy Fine and rehab for 1st offence than imprisonment for all other DUI offences to keep drunk drivers off the streets and killing other drivers and passengers.

Our prisons are already filled with too many drug offenders. We do not want to add DUI's to the population.

Taking away their drivers license only works on the honor system and these people are not honorable so incarcerate them, make the decision for them.

Heavy fines don't help; taking away the drivers license makes no difference as most of the DUI drivers don't have a drivers license or vehicle insurance anyway. Only imprisonment helps because they can't drive while in prison.

I am alarmed by the fact that 1 in 7 drivers in MN have a DUI on record. In 2011, 111 were killed, and 29,257 arrests were made. Just crazy, and something drastic needs to be done to discourage such bad behavior. Since there is NO death penalty in MN, I suppose a year in jail for first timers, as a warning, then hard felony prison time for subsequent convictions would be enough of a deterrent for most ordinary drunks. A 50,000 bed, medium security facility could be built with a liquor tax to house these Cretans.

I still think technology can come to the rescue for first time offenders, with some sort of breathalyzer or computerized 'drunk quiz' that must be answered by the registered driver before they can take off. The technology certainly exists to make this a reality.
For repeat offenders? Imprisonment.

Charge the bars and throw away the keys. Make the whole supply chain including the media that glorifies alcohol pay. I had a friend killed by a drunk driver under age and the bar did not get charged.

Prison time, heavy fines, confiscate automobile, and licence suspension. When licence renewed, breathalyzer to start car and if that's bypassed or driving a car without it, more very heavy fines. The message won't get through without severe penalties. If they kill someone, it's no different than murder, then - an eye for an eye.
I also like the public flogging idea I read below.

There is no "one size fits all" for this subject. I do believe that putting people in prison will do more harm than good. Before we know it, we will have murderers released early to make room for drunk drivers.
-In this country, money talks! Heavy fines going after financial assets. Take the car and auction it while making them continue to pay the remaining of the loan.
-Another thing about this country is status. Make them do very public community work. Put them out there for everyone to see that these guys are the ones willing to get drunk and then operate a 2500 pound vehicle which at that point becomes a weapon.
-Prosecutors; STOP PLEADING THESE CASES TO RECKLESS DRIVING!!!!! Call them what they are, DRUNK DRIVING

My thoughts are: Flags at DMV to prevent registraton of car, even if jointly owned,by a DWI driver Confiscation of any car or truck driven by DWI driver.. regardless of the car or truck's owner! I am sure that the CLU would fight it.. but it has to hurt repeat offenders and those who allow repeat offenders to use their vehicles

So people want to put even more people in jail then come with money! We already have more people jail percentage wise than any other country in the world! Just take their autos away let the walk or take mass transit.
